so where do I send the $2 and submissions?

    • Editors says:

Hello Steve! You can send them through our trusty online submission manager, right here: http://hootreview.submishmash.com/submit
After you make an account with submishmash (it takes a minute) you’ll be able to upload your document, and information for how you want to pay the $2.

We’re looking forward to reading your work!

  2. Bligh says:

I really love your clean look and your restrained (from being obnoxiously over-the-top) copy. Your “brevity” mantra and publication format are stellar! But I’m not paying $2 to submit 150 words. Submitting 150 words with no guaranteed money is itself a generous act on my behalf. Still, I look forward to seeing what you produce.

    • Editors says:

We totally understand–the $2 fee won’t be popular with everyone. But it allows us to pay our authors (!) which many literary magazines cannot do, because running a litmag is pretty much a guaranteed way to lose time & money (we don’t have advertising space or anything to sell).

If you ever change your mind, we’d love to read your work. You actually get 300 words for $2 (you can submit two pieces). And we also accept submissions for free for online-only publication, if you email them to “onlinesubmissions@hootreview.com”. We cannot pay the authors that we publish online, but there’s no charge for those submissions.

      • Bligh says:

Fair enough. I’d love to see the project thrive, and I can think of some far less fruitful ways to spend my time/ money (watching tv with machiatto (sp?) in hand). I may submit yet.

  3. Kristin says:

I am very tempted to subscribe, but really would like to see a sample. I think it’d be very beneficial to put at least one sample up so people have an idea of the caliber of writing you’re sending out. Just a thought. 🙂

    • Editors says:

      Hi Kristin!
You’re totally right– we definitely need to put a sample up. Unfortunately, we don’t have any samples yet because October will be our first issue. After that, though, we’ll have a sample up for sure.

However!! There is a semi-solution– we are going to offer free copies of our first issue to those who agree (on honor) to share the literature and pass a few of them around. If that’s something you might be willing to do, check back in err…probably the next three hours. We’ll be adding a tab to the website for “sharing.”

  4. Alia J says:

Thanks for the friendly rejection letter, which was the most cordial I’ve read. I’ve subscribed & will submit again in the future. Is it a standard postcard you use for the publication or a generously sized version? lol

Best of luck with your publication.

    ciao for now,
    Alia J James

    • Editors says:

      Hello Alia–
For now, it’s a standard postcard. Though I’d guess there will be a few “generously-sized” postcards for special issues, after things get arollin’. And thank you again for your submissions–we’ll look forward to reading more of your work in the future.

  5. Sam says:

    Hello there!

I noticed that the poetry has to be 10 lines or less – but what about sonnets? Are 14 lines too large? I’m just asking because I’m a big fan of form poetry, and I’d be bummed if I couldn’t submit a sonnet…

    • Editors says:

      Hey there Sam–

Thanks for asking. We’ve actually had a lot of people ask about sonnets, we’ve been thinking about it, and here is the final decision: We will accept sonnets, but only those with fewer than 150 words. Also, if your lines are long, be open to some creative re-formatting…say, us printing two separate lines separated by ” / ” instead of an actual line break, or perhaps having half of the lines running up the side of the postcard (in a different direction than the first, to make best use of the space).

Of course, none of those things might happen to it. And all of things might happen to a different poem that’s only 8 lines long. That’s kind of the beauty & excitement of the writing-art interplay with which we’re hoping to experiment.

      • Sam says:

Thanks for your reply! Definitely putting in a few pieces now! Thanks for the response.
And yes, “creative re-formatting” is certainly your right…the whole bit is a postcard, afterall.

  6. Carin says:

    Hi! A couple of questions:
I just want to clarify “previously unpublished” — so if it’s been on my blog, does that mean it’s been published? I feel kinda silly for asking, but . . . I’m asking!
Also, as above, with the poems of 10 lines or less . . . I have some poems that are less than 150 words. Would you be willing to take a look and see if you would like to use the / in between some lines . . . or some other creative mashups?
    Thanks!
    Carin

    • Editors says:

      Hi Carin-
If it’s <150 words, and you're open to reformatting, we'd love to see it!

As for "previously unpublished," if it's been on your blog, that's fine (assuming your blog is mostly just your friends and family, and doesn't get 300 hits a day). We'd just ask that you take it off your blog before you submit it.

And don't feel silly for asking! Please feel free to ask anything.

  7. Freya Morris says:

What about if you’re from the UK. Can we still get hold of a copy here? I guess not, but thought I’d ask because it sounds and looks great. I can’t believe that it’s not a UK publication – because it definitely has that feel about it.

    • Editors says:

      Hey Freya–

Sure! We’ll send you some copies…we’d love to have HOOT going around the UK!

If you wanted to subscribe, we’d probably have to charge a little more to handle postage…It’ll probably be about $20…like 13 pounds, or 14.75 euros, instead of $14…we’ll set up an “international subscriptions” button this week.

But for now, go ahead and send us your address at “info@hootreview.com” and we’ll sign you up for free copies of our first issue if you’ll promise to spread them around!

UPDATE– we’ve made international subscriptions available! Click the link on our subscriptions page: http://hootreview.com/subscribe. $14 + $6 shipping!

  8. I took a risk with my subscription. I had not seen the writing, but loved the idea of poetry or reviews on a postcard. I’m old-fashioned, I still love pen and paper. I also loved the first edition of HOOT. It was marvelously witty – a nice refreshing break in the middle of bills and scholarly journals. I especially loved the handwritten, “Enjoy.” Thanks for this wonderful little idea. I wish you continued success and I look forward to the next edition.

  9. Sue says:

I love this idea, and I have subscribed. I know this is only the second issue but I have yet to receive an issue in the mail. Is the November issue on the way?
    Thanks,
    Sue

    • Editors says:

      Hi Sue–
Yes! Issue 2 was mailed on Monday, and you were on our subscriber list, so you should have it soon. We’ve been very surprised at how slowly postcards travel. But if you don’t have it by next week, let us know– we’d be glad to resend it.

      Amanda

  10. Sue says:

I received the November issue today! It looks great!
    Thanks.
    Sue

  11. Cuff says:

The concept seems pretty cool but the writing’s vanilla. Not sure how much discarded traction it might have with the words that I see. IMO

    • admin says:

Sorry you feel that way, Cuff– if you’ve done writing which you feel is “vanilla”, we’d certainly love for you to submit it!

  12. Janet says:

As someone who writes postcard fiction I was so happy to come across your site. It’s always nice to find kindred spirits.

  13. Sandee says:

Enjoyed meeting you and seeing your work at AWP–such a great idea! The issues I sent to friends were well-received, and I’m looking forward to my subscription. Thanks!

  14. Lindsay says:

Just wondering… would a piece posted on a private facebook page be considered published? TIA!

    • admin says:

Hi Lindsay– No, it wouldn’t be considered published, unless you have quite a few friends viewing this page. You should also delete the post, if possible, before submitting it to us!

  15. June says:

Hi, I was just wondering how I would go about submitting under a pseudonym. Should I include that in the cover letter?

    • admin says:

      Hi June,
It depends on the reason for a pseudonym. If you’re submitting under one because you want to make sure we don’t know who you are while reading, then you can just tell us if we accept your piece. If it’s because you write under a pseudonym generally– sure, go ahead and put it in the cover letter– but then also remind us if we accept your work!

  16. Hey guys! We met you at The AWP in Seattle! Posted your information on our Web site. Take a look!

    It was GREAT meeting you!

  17. I LOVE HOOT! Beautifully done! I’m just wondering how to check on the status of my submission. Thanks! Cynthia

  18. DL Shirey says:

Hello. Your pub has been included on my list at http://bit.ly/FlashFicList. These are places, like yours, that publish writers’ shorter fiction (and creative non-fiction) pieces, not the longer stuff. If you know of others that I’ve missed, please let me know. Thanks.

  19. Jasmine S says:

Hello. Do you guys take volunteers?

  20. Andrew Owen Dugas says:

    Hi guys,

    Love the HOOT!

You accepted a story of mine “Message from the Other Side” a couple of years ago. It hasn’t appeared yet. Sorry to reach out to you here, but I’ve tried reaching you through Submittable, but haven’t heard back.

    LMK

    Best

    Andy

    • admin says:

Hi Andy – if it’s in Submittable, we almost never see it. Best to contact us directly via email (info@hootreview.com). Send us the details and we’ll rectify this ASAP 🙂

  21. Leandra Toomoth says:

Hello! I’m trying to find a email to make contact with someone at HOOT Review? I have tried to make contact via the Submittable application; however, have yet to receive a response. Thank you!
